How does Invisalign treatment work?

Invisalign offers a popular option opposite traditional metal braces, with two clear aligners and tooth-coloured abutments on your teeth that work to pull your teeth into position over time gently. Through smart scanning technology, that takes 6,000 images per second, your Invisalign dentist can take 3D images of your teeth and let you see what your teeth will look like after treatment. This process also helps your dentist to create a custom plan tailored to you, to safely and gently correct gaps, narrow bridges and crooked teeth.

Please note: Invisalign might not be the right solution for every person’s oral health, teeth or goals. This is why getting an Invisalign consultation is essential to understand what the treatment can realistically achieve and in what timeframe. For minor gaps, dental bonding can offer an alternative solution.

Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign aligners are removable, making them easy to clean and maintain good oral hygiene. They are also more comfortable than traditional metal braces, as there are no wires or brackets to irritate the mouth. Additionally, because they are clear, they are less noticeable and allow patients to maintain their confidence while undergoing orthodontic treatment.

  • A virtually invisible option for straighter teeth
  • Less painful than metal braces
  • Removable for eating, drinking and cleaning
  • Effectively but gently moves teeth in the needed directions
  • You can whiten teeth while wearing Invisalign clear aligners (however we recommend waiting till 6 months after treatment)
  • May be compatible with crowns & bridges, or dental implants for those with missing natural teeth
  • Depending on the complexity of the case, it can be completed in as little as four months (most treatment ranges between 12 – 18 months)

Invisalign Procedure

3D scanning

Our Invisalign dentist will use X-rays, 3D scans, videos and photos to collect data that we send to the Invisalign laboratory to get a 3D model of your teeth.

3D imaging and treatment plan

At the following appointment, you will receive your personalised ClinCheck®, which will visually show you projections of how your teeth will shift throughout treatment and what the end results will look like.

Fitting the aligners

If you would like to proceed, we will have your Invisalign aligners made for you. Once they are ready, we will let you know when you can pick them up from the clinic and ensure that they make a proper snug fit.

Aftercare and maintenance

We will let you know how to properly care for your Invisalign and teeth for the projected treatment. You will likely also need a new set of Invisalign clear aligners every 4-6 weeks, with slight alterations to help move your teeth.

Invisalign Aftercare

Clean your aligners regularly

It’s important to clean your Invisalign aligners regularly to keep them free of bacteria and prevent discolouration. You can clean them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild soap or with specialised cleaning crystals. Avoid using hot water or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the aligners.

Wear your aligners as directed

Invisalign aligners need to be worn for at least 22 hours a day to be effective. It’s important to wear them as directed by your orthodontist to ensure that your teeth are moving as they should. Removing them for extended periods can prolong the treatment time and affect the final results.

Store your aligners properly

When you’re not wearing your Invisalign aligners, it’s important to store them properly to prevent loss or damage. Use the provided storage case to keep them safe and clean. Avoid leaving them exposed to the sun or heat, as this can warp the aligners and affect their fit.

Is Invisalign right for me?

If Invisalign is something you are considering book in a free consultation with Dr. Petronilla Grace. She will evaluate your smile and give you a rough estimate on how long she thinks it will take for you.

Precise pricing and length of treatment can’t be determined until we send off your dental impressions to Invisalign. You have the option to pay a fee before locking in whether you’d like to go ahead, which allows you to see exactly the number of aligners you require, as well as the finished product of your new smile.

The success of treatment is going to depend on how diligent you are in wearing your aligners. The aligners should be worn for 22 hours a day, and are to be changed according to the instructions given to you by the dentist.

Invisalign

Invisalign for Adults

Invisalign treatment is a popular option for adults looking to straighten teeth, especially among professionals that count on making appearances.

Invisalign for Teens

Teenagers tend to be self-conscious already, with a lot of pressure and changes around puberty. Invisalign offers a discreet teeth alignment treatment for self-conscious teens, with no metal abutments or wires that get in the way of their smile.

Invisalign for Children

Invisalign offers a teeth straightening option for children as young as 6 – 10.

Invisalign for Overbite

Invisalign treatment can fix a mild or moderate overbite (although treatment time will likely be longer). Correcting a severe overbite, however, requires traditional Orthodontics.
